Microsoft releases Analytics Platform System update

Microsoft has announced that the appliance update, Analytics Platform System (APS) 2016, has been released to manufacturing and is generally available. APS is Microsoft’s scale-out Massively Parallel Processing integrated system for data warehouse specific workloads.

The appliance update builds on SQL Server 2016 and offers additional language coverage to support migrations from SQL Server and other platforms. It also features improved security for hybrid scenarios and the latest security and bug fixes through new firmware and driver updates.

Microsoft releases Data Migration Assistant 2.0

Microsoft has announced the general availability of Data Migration Assistant v2.0, which replaces the previous SQL Server Upgrade Advisor tool. The Assistant is a free tool that checks database schema and static objects for breaking changes from prior versions. The tool provides the capability to move schema, data and uncontained objects, including user logins, from a source server to a SQL Server 2012, 2014 or 2016 target server, which can be on premise or in an Azure VM.

Microsoft releases BizTalk Server 2016

Microsoft has announced the release of BizTalk Server 2016. The release features Hybrid connectivity that supports connecting to cloud native applications, web and mobile back end systems as well as custom applications through the Azure Logic Apps adapter. It also provides integration with the latest Microsoft products such as Windows Server 2016, Visual Studio 2015, SQL Server 2016 and Office 2016.

Microsoft releases R Tools for Visual Studio 0.5

Microsoft has announced the availability of R Tools for Visual Studio 0.5 (RTVS), which integrates with SQL Server to simplify working with SQL data. The release includes integrated support for SQL and SQL Stored Procedures, multiple plot windows, plot history with plot thumbnails for navigation as well as general improvements and bug fixes.

Microsoft updates SQL Server Management Studio

Microsoft has released an updated version of SQL Server Management Studio. The update includes a new Active Directory authentication option, new PowerShell cmdlets to help perform SQL Server login management, initial beta support for high-resolution displays, support for filtering in the ”Databases” node of the Object explorer as well a range of bug fixes.

Microsoft releases JDBC Driver 6.0 for SQL Server

Microsoft has announced the full release of its JDBC Driver 6.0 for SQL Server, which provides data access to SQL Server and Azure SQL Database for Java-based applications. The new driver supports Always Encrypted, Azure Active Directory authentication, Table-Valued Parameters, extended support for retrieving parameter metadata using queries, additional language support for connections as well as transparent connections to AlwaysOn Availability Groups.

Microsoft releases Azure SQL Data Warehouse

Microsoft has announced the general availability of Azure SQL Data Warehouse, which is a fully managed DW as a Service that can be provisioned in minutes and scale up to 60 times larger in seconds. The architecture separates compute and storage so that they can be scaled independently. The service supports interactive queries and data analysis using existing SQL-based tools and business intelligence applications.

Microsoft releases Always Encrypted for Azure SQL Database

Microsoft has announced the general availability of Always Encrypted in Azure SQL Database. The solution encrypts information in the database at all times including query processing, and allows decryption at the point of use by authorised staff or applications that need to process the data. Encryption keys are managed outside of the database.
