Microsoft releases a new version of System Center Configuration Manager

Microsoft has announced the release of a new version of System Center Configuration Manager (1606). The update includes new features and enhancements in security and data protection, application management, content distribution, deployment and provisioning, end user experience as well as new functionality for customers using Configuration Manager in hybrid mode with Microsoft Intune. This version also provides support for the Windows 10 Anniversary update.

Microsoft releases JDBC Driver 6.0 for SQL Server

Microsoft has announced the full release of its JDBC Driver 6.0 for SQL Server, which provides data access to SQL Server and Azure SQL Database for Java-based applications. The new driver supports Always Encrypted, Azure Active Directory authentication, Table-Valued Parameters, extended support for retrieving parameter metadata using queries, additional language support for connections as well as transparent connections to AlwaysOn Availability Groups.

Microsoft releases Azure SQL Data Warehouse

Microsoft has announced the general availability of Azure SQL Data Warehouse, which is a fully managed DW as a Service that can be provisioned in minutes and scale up to 60 times larger in seconds. The architecture separates compute and storage so that they can be scaled independently. The service supports interactive queries and data analysis using existing SQL-based tools and business intelligence applications.

Microsoft releases Power BI Embedded services

Microsoft has announced the general availability of the Power BI Embedded services in nine different regions around the globe. Power BI Embedded is an Azure service that allows developers to use the core building blocks of Power BI, such as reports and datasets, within applications. The release includes a simplified authentication mechanism, row level security support and an improved billing model.

GE and Microsoft announce partnership

GE and Microsoft have announced a partnership that will make GE’s Predix platform for the Industrial Internet available on the Microsoft Azure cloud for industrial businesses. The move marks the first step in a broad strategic collaboration between the two companies, which will allow customers to capture intelligence from their industrial assets and take utilise Microsoft’s enterprise cloud applications.

Microsoft releases Always Encrypted for Azure SQL Database

Microsoft has announced the general availability of Always Encrypted in Azure SQL Database. The solution encrypts information in the database at all times including query processing, and allows decryption at the point of use by authorised staff or applications that need to process the data. Encryption keys are managed outside of the database.

Microsoft announces leadership changes

Satya Nadella (CEO) has disclosed that Kevin Turner leaves Microsoft at the end of July. With his departure, Satya has made organisational changes that integrate the current SMSG organisation into the rest of Microsoft to form a unified senior leadership team…

  • Judson Althoff will lead the Worldwide Commercial Business, which will focus on the commercial segments, inclusive of EPG, Public Sector, SMS&P, DX and Services.
  • Jean-Philippe Courtois will lead Global Sales, Marketing and Operations, which span all of Microsoft’s 13 areas across our North America and international businesses as well as the global Marketing and Operations organisation.
  • Chris Capossela will lead the Worldwide Marketing and Consumer Business, which includes CCG, MSA and PSM, OEM, and Microsoft Retail Stores, in addition to his current worldwide marketing team.
  • Kurt DelBene will lead IT and Operations, in addition to Corporate Strategy.
  • Amy Hood will lead the current SMSG finance team and WWLP, in addition to the central finance team.

Jean-Philippe and Judson will report directly to Satya and join the senior leadership team. Jean-Philippe will take full accountability for the Microsoft North America business and Judson will remain as acting lead for day-to-day operations until a replacement for him is announced.

View on Microsoft’s June activities

The most significant event this month has been Microsoft’s announcement of its planned acquisition of LinkedIn. This will be the largest acquisition in Microsoft’s corporate history. Microsoft’s CEO believes that LinkedIn information can be incorporated into Office 365 and Dynamics and envisages a LinkedIn newsfeed that serves up articles based on an individual’s current project with Office suggesting an expert to connect with via LinkedIn. There are also other potential synergies with Office 665, Dynamics CRM & ERP as well as advertising products and services.

Microsoft continues extending its services to non-Microsoft platforms with Translator for Amazon Fire available from the Amazon Underground app store and Outlook watch face for Android Wear.

Microsoft has announced that it will use Apache Spark to power its big data and analytics offerings, which includes Cortana Intelligence Suite, Power BI and Microsoft R Server.

The CRM 2016 spring wave includes Dynamics CRM Online 2016 Update 1, Dynamics CRM 2016 Service Pack 1, Dynamics Marketing 2016 Update 1 and Social Engagement 2016 Update 1.5.

Microsoft has featured in a number of Gartner’s Magic Quadrants. Identity and Access Management as a Service (IDaaS) for 2016 and Azure Active Directory was placed in the “leaders” quadrant with a favourable completeness of vision assignment. A visionary placement for Intune and the Enterprise Mobility Suite in the Enterprise Mobility Management Magic Quadrant as well as a Leader in the Mobile Application Development Platforms Magic Quadrant.

Of interest is the release of Microsoft’s first holographic email and calendaring apps, Outlook Mail and Calendar, to Microsoft HoloLens.

Microsoft has announced Azure Information Protection, which is a new service that builds on Azure Rights Management (Azure RMS) and its Secure Islands acquisition. There are no changes for current Azure RMS customers until the General Availability of Azure Information Protection later this calendar year.

A preview of Azure AD Conditional Access policies for Exchange and SharePoint Online has been made available. These policies can be used to require multi-factor authentication (MFA) or block access based on network location.

Microsoft will release its Windows 10 Anniversary Update on 2 August. There have been quite a few test builds of the Anniversary Update for Fast Ring PC and phone testers. The Start Menu and Action Centre include a range of refinements and changes as well as significant updates to Edge, which starts to support add-ins.
