Microsoft releases Open XML SDK as an Open Source Project

Microsoft has announced the release of an Open XML SDK as an open source project through the MS Open Tech hub. Although the SDK has been available since 2007, this release includes full source code available under the Apache 2.0 license on GitHub. In addition, the Open XML conceptual content for developers is available on GitHub as well as an Open XML Package Editor for Visual Studio.

Microsoft Devices Group unveils the Nokia X2

Microsoft Devices Group has unveiled the Nokia X2, which should go on sale for a suggested price of 99 Euros in July 2014. Like the Nokia X, the new Nokia X2 provides access to Android apps and Microsoft services, while allowing people to switch between apps with the Fastlane feature.

Microsoft announces increases to free OneDrive storage space

Microsoft has announced that OneDrive will come with 15 GB for free (up from 7 GB) and 1 TB for all versions of Office 365 as well as reduced prices for additional storage. The new monthly prices will be $1.99 for 100 GB (previously $7.49) and $3.99 for 200 GB (previously $11.49).

Lumia 635 available in Europe and Asia

Microsoft has announced the availability of the Lumia 635 throughout many parts of Europe and Asia, with further rollouts – including the United States – expected in the coming months. The Windows Phone 8.1 device will retail at $189 and includes the new digital personal assistant Cortana and smartphone keyboard Word Flow.

Surface Pro 3 goes on sale in retail stores

Microsoft has announced that Surface Pro 3 Core i5 is now on sale at retail stores, online, and through authorised resellers in Canada and the United States. The Core i3 and Core i7 versions will be available on 1 August in Canada and the US. By the end of August 2014 all versions of Surface Pro 3, as well as select new accessories, will become available for purchase in 26 additional markets.

Microsoft announces SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Groups support for Azure Regions

Microsoft has announced that SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Groups are now supported between Azure Regions (4 in United States, 2 in Europe, 2 in Asia Pacific, 2 in Japan, and 1 in Brazil). Having Availability Groups spanning two or more Azure regions enables support for disaster recovery and geo-distributed read scale-out.

Microsoft releases Skype 5.1 for iPhone

Microsoft has released Skype 5.1 for iPhone a week after releasing version 5.0. The latest releases is intended to implement features based on user feedback and includes deleting conversations from recent list, simplified favourites and better matching of the people list to the desktop version.

Microsoft releases Skype 4.3 for Linux

Microsoft has released Skype for Linux version 4.3.0.37. The release includes an updated UI, cloud-based Group Chat, more reliable file transfer support when using multiple devices at once, improved accessibility for blind and visually impaired users, PulseAudio 3.0 and 4.0 support as well as a range of bug fixes.
